Bridge event 2022

The Bob Kerrey Bridge event is becoming a signature event for the Nebraska Afghan Community Center. In 2022, We made this event a little more organized. We had the bridge area reserved for the evening, and the Afghan flag was illuminated on the beautiful Bob Kerrey pedesterian bridge. The theme of this year event was called “Saving the Afghan flag” in protest to the Taliban removing the national flag from all government offices.

Manizha Ahmadi presented the event with a beautiful Dari and Pashtu poem, followed by the National Anthem of Afghanistan. Guest speakers from both Afghan and non Afghan nationalities came up to stage and waited for their turns to deliver their speeches.  The event had more people this time than previous year. Afghan national danced was performed by a group of Afghans. The purpose of this event was to connect newly arrived Afghans with older Afghan community and the new arrived Afghans showcase their skills and education to others. This event connected the Afghans with non-Afghans too.

Guest speakers took turns and talked about the importance of community and as well as welcoming new Americans to our society and community.  Key leaders who spoke at the event were Hanif Sufizada NACC forefront staff member and volunteer, Chris Tonegues CEO of Lutheran Family Services, Felex Angarman Chief of Staff of Senator Don Becon's office, Khapalwak Shegiwal newly arrived Afghans and former Afghan governemt staff, and Mujtaba Karimi newly arrived Afghan and former Afghan governement presidential office staff.
